For more than three decades, Tony Cokes (b. 1956, Richmond, USA; lives and works in Providence, USA) has been exploring in his work the ideology and affect politics of media and popular culture as well as their social impact. Starting from a fundamental critique of the representation and visual commodification of African-American communities in film, television, advertising, and music videos, Cokes has developed a unique form of video essay that radically rejects ­representational imagery. These fast-paced works consist of found text and sound material from diverse sources such as critical theory, online journalism, literature, and­ popular music. The US artist’s first institutional solo exhibition in Germany also marks the first ­comprehensive collaboration between Kunstverein München and Haus der Kunst. The thematic starting point for Cokes’s new productions is the ideological and propagandistic entanglements of both exhibition venues during the Nazi era as well as their cultural-political role in the context of the 20th Olympic Games in Munich in 1972.

Dans ce numéro, on accorde une place importante de certains usages jusqu'alors considérés comme appartenant davantage au domaine de la sociologie qu'à celui de l'esthétique. On explique aussi que l'art vidéo intervienne ici comme manifestation sectorielle comme fluorescence singulière sur fond de pratiques urbaines, plutôt que de se montrer comme rare et digne d'intérêt par cela qu'il serait art et se présenterait comme tel. En un mot, et pour conclure, c'est à une logique du fragment de l'éclatement que répondent les contributions qui vont suivre.

Premier d’une série de trois volumes d’entretiens retraçant l’histoire de l’art vidéo à travers artpress, L’art vidéo 1. Les débuts réunit des artistes des deux premières générations de vidéastes. Des pionniers Wolf Vostell et Nam June Paik au succès, en 1995, de Bill Viola et Gary Hill à la Biennale de Venise, la vidéo s’affirme comme une pratique incontournable de l’art contemporain. Tandis que la vidéosurveillance inspire des travaux en circuit fermé, la télévision reste longtemps la référence, souvent en négatif, de l’art vidéo qui prend la forme de bandes diffusées dans des moniteurs. Mais les artistes commencent aussi à explorer les voies de la vidéosculpture et de l’installation. De cette histoire, artpress donne une vision interdisciplinaire qui l’ouvre à la vidéo-théâtre, à la vidéo-danse ou à la vidéo-performance.

Entre chien et loup ? Les vidéos d'Anri Sala cherchent à pérenniser ce moment où, au crépuscule, la lumière se fait incertaine ; ce temps, ici prolongé, d'inquiétude, d'angoisse et de déshumanisation ; cette période d'entre-deux où l'on se perd et se dissout... L'ouvrage consacrée à Anri Sala, jeune artiste albanais, qui réside à Paris depuis 1996, nous montre principalement les vidéos qui ont été exposées au Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris-ARC lors d'une exposition qui s'est déroulée du 25 mars au 16 mai 2004. L'ouvrage et l'exposition plonge le spectateur dans cet univers, fondé sur la notion d'étrangeté et fortement marqué par les origines de l'artiste. Ses cinq dernières vidéos, réalisées entre 2002 et 2004, sont présentées au sein d'une scénographie que l'artiste a contrôlée, liant ainsi contenu et contenant autour du thème donné en titre, "Entre chien et loup".

Funkstoerung (aka Chris de Luca and Michael Fakesch) is not only known for their music, but for their successful visual collaborations with innovative designers. Rather than only release their current album "Disconnected" as a traditional CD, Funkstoerung also presents related material in two additional media : a DVD and a book. These will be sold together as the hybrid product Isolated, which features new visuals and moving images by creatives from around the world. The combination of original music and cutting-edge design were ideal for the production of this initial collaboration between !K7 Records and dgv. In addition to the exclusive bonus tracks, the interactive DVD consists of video clips for all of the music from "Disconnected". Some songs are even featured in multiple versions. These were produced by some of today's most diverse and exciting filmmakers, directors and animators and are presented in an inspirational interface designed by Die Gestalten. Participating artists include MK-12 (USA), Inkunstruktion (France) and Viagrafik (Germany). The book features the best submissions from the visual remix project isolate. When Funkstoerung called upon designers to create a cover for "Disconnected" for this project, they received a tidal wave of entries from over 600 international creatives in response. This collection includes work from talent including Keep Adding and David Gleber (USA), Maiko Gubler of Alrt (Germany) and Paulo Lima of Nothing Lasts Forever (Portugal) as well as Andrew Johnstone of Design is Kinky, Yok! And Victim (Australia). Its exciting sounds, unique visuals and compelling multi-disciplinary approach make Isolated a trailblazing example of how music can be presented as a product by today's music industry.
